COMMUNITY BENEFITS FROM NEW SERVICES AND INITIATIVES

The Unity Team has always placed a high emphasis on providing better and new services to the community. Below are just some of the programs, services and initiatives delivered over the past two terms of Council:

  • Extended the CCTV monitoring network to 390 cameras and expanded it to cover hot spots in suburbs and local public parks
  • Provided more than 700 classes a year through the Active Living Program on the Esplanade and extended the program into suburban parks
  • Constructed a new headquarters for Cairns SES
  • Introduced Free Wi-Wi at major recreational areas throughout Cairns and at Libraries
  • Developed and launched the My Cairns app to provide residents with a one-stop place to find out information on Council services and events
  • Conducted the most extensive community consultation exercise the city has seen with Our Cairns Survey which produced 6500 responses on a wide variety of questions to guide Council in its future direction
  • Established Community Gardens at Manoora, Edmonton, Holloways Beach, Trinity Park, Bungalow, Gordonvale, and Redlynch Valley and pocket gardens at Whitfield and Edge Hill.
  • Upgraded the Gordonvale, Manunda, and Cairns City libraries
  • Introduced the Tech Savvy program and First5Forever program at Cairns Libraries
  • Upgraded 90 public bus stops in the Cairns area to DDA compliance and Increased number of wheelchair accessible car parks in the CBD
  • Created 50 off-leash dog areas in parks to encourage owners to run their animals off lead in a safe environment, reducing attacks in public areas
  • Created the Go Clubs program to support local sporting clubs through funding and other assistance, with 209 clubs (2016 figure) now participating
  • Created the Green Space Our Place program which now involves more than 245 volunteers to contribute 25,000 hours to green space projects
  • Conducted a city-wide dog audit, resulting in 4500 more dogs being registered
  • Developed and endorsed a new City Centre Master Plan to roll out over the next 4 years
